Although most people have probably already assumed this due to lack of activity, I would like to formally mention that I do not intend to make another Kororaa release. I will soon take down the forums, wiki and eventually this web page.

The reasons for this are many, but include:
Sabayon is doing a great job at being a binary Gentoo distribution;
Gentoo itself comes with a reasonable GUI installer;
Compiz is now included in many distributions by default;
Kororaa cannot compete with distributions who include non-free drivers by default; and,
It became too much for me to do on my own.

I intend to concentrate on my full time work, Make The Move and writing Linux based reviews and articles for various online entities such as Distrowatch.

Thank you to everyone who has taken an interest in Kororaa, it has been a lot of fun!

All the best.

Chris

The conference and moving on

Linux Conference Australia was a blast. I had a great time and met many people. The quality of the conference was excellent, very well planned and the talks were great.

If you've never been to Linux Conference Australia make sure you come along next year!

Thanks again to everyone who enabled me to go.

I went to the airport at 6am to pick up the guys from Please Send Us to Linux Conf AU (Mike, Alex, Justin and Brandon) who came across from Oregon State University. Their flight was, of course, delayed and they arrived some two hours later. It was great to meet them and take them around Sydney. We caught the train into the city and found their accommodation for night 1 in Australia, at WakeUp! hostel on George St.

Checking them in we dumped our bags and headed up George street to Circular Quay. I wasted no time in showing them the major sites: Sydney Harbour; the Bridge; and the Opera House.

The next day we went to the Zoo and I got sunburnt.. having just come back from overseas I had forgotten what summer in Australia is like.

They really enjoyed the conference and I hope they can come back next year.

That's all for now.

Chris

Linux Conference Australia, 15th-20th Jan 2007

I was hoping to be attending the Linux Australia Conference in Sydney next week, but since resigning from my job mid last year (2005) and then traveling overseas for 4+ months my bank is entirely empty.

This meant I was unable to attend the Linux Australia Conference which was very disappointing :(

I want to sincerely thank everyone who has donated some money to the Kororaa project. Because of your generosity we have received a total of AU$250 which we have decided to put towards the conference. So through this and thanks to Matt (my partner in the Kororaa project who is sponsoring me the rest of the way) I am now able to attend LCA as our official delegate ;) Woohoo!

I'm hoping to find some work by the end of January, or things will get very very interesting.

So thanks again to everyone. If you're going to LCA I hope to see you there!

Cheers,
Chris

Kororaa AIGLXgl 0.3 Live CD Released

We are happy to release Kororaa AIGLXgl 0.3 Live CD.

It is available via direct download and bittorrent. Please see the Live CD page here for more details.

Major changes include the removal of non-GPL ATI and NVIDIA video card drivers (see here); the inclusion of AIGLX now along with Xgl (hence the name), 2.6.18 CK patchset based kernel, KDE 3.5.4, Gnome 2.14, updated installer, many bug fixes, as well as a new version of the Kororaa Penguin and other artwork by Pascal Klein.

The system works well on my Macbook with its integrated Intel video card. The open source radeon driver will work with many ATI cards, but not all the newer ones. If you have an NVIDIA video card 3D effects will not be available, however you can still use this CD as a "normal" livecd and installation to disk is available (where you can install any drivers you wish).

We hope you enjoy!

Your Kororaa Team :)

Greetings.

Just letting people know that I'm doing some final testing on the limited (one computer) I have here. Things are going well so I will probably release 0.3 shortly.

A reminder that 0.3 will NOT contain the non-GPL nVidia and ATI drivers. Cards that require these drivers will not have fancy Xgl/AIGLX effects when booting the livecd. The livecd will still work like a normal livecd (just without effects) and you are able to install to disk. Once you've installed you can install any driver you want.

-c
